What Your Child Makes

The Unicorn and Pet Purse is a real beginner sewing kit. Kids stitch a heart and ears onto the unicorn, sew its pink wings together, stuff the body, and close it up with a felt tail. Then they sew three stars, a cloud, and a blue, yellow, and pink rainbow onto a purple felt purse, add the handles, and sew up the sides. The unicorn fits right inside, so the purse becomes its carrier.

Learning to Sew, One Hole at a Time

Every piece comes cut to shape with the holes already punched, so there is no pattern to trace and no fabric to cut. The illustrated booklet starts with threading the needle and tying a knot, then teaches two stitches, the back stitch and the blanket stitch, before the projects begin.

We loved doing this as a family

This took us a long time to do but it was fun to do as a family. 2 year old, 4 year old and a seven year old were able to do this with my guidance. We definitely would recommend this along with patience haha

Too hard for a 5 year old. The sewing holes are very small and too close together. If the holes were larger and farther apart, it would be more manageable for a young child's first sewing experience.

What's included in the Unicorn and Pet Purse?

What can kids make with it?

Two projects. The first is a plush white unicorn with pink wings, a pink horn, a heart on each side, and a felt tail. The second is a purple felt purse with handles, three stars, a cloud, and a blue, yellow, and pink rainbow. The unicorn fits inside the purse, which is why we call it a pet purse.

Which parts are sewn, and is there any gluing?

Every felt piece is sewn. Kids use a back stitch for the hearts, ears, wing details, stars, cloud, and rainbow, a blanket stitch to join the wing pieces and the sides of the purse, and an "X" stitch to attach the handles. There is no glue in the kit and none is needed.

Is this a sewing kit or a no-sew kit?

It is a real sewing kit, and a gentle first one, since the holes are already punched. If you are looking for a no-sew unicorn project, our Unicorn Pillow Kit is the one to choose.

What ages is it best for?

It is recommended for ages 5 and up, with adult supervision. Younger sewers may want a grown-up beside them, especially for threading the needle and tying the knots, while the pre-punched holes show where every stitch goes.

Is it safe for kids?

Every Pinwheel Crafts kit is CPSIA compliant, which means it meets the US federal safety requirements for children's products, and this kit conforms to ASTM D-4236, the US labeling standard for art materials. It contains small parts, so it is not for children under 3. The needles are plastic, but they are still needles, so we recommend adult supervision while kids sew.

What will my child learn?

The illustrated booklet starts with threading the needle, tying a knot, adding more thread, and finishing off. Then it teaches the back stitch and the blanket stitch, and the purse handles use a simple "X" stitch.
