What Your Child Builds
The Robotic Dinosaur Kit turns a pile of pre-cut wooden parts into three dinosaurs that really move. Kids connect a small motor to a wired controller, fit the body, head, and tail together, and screw on the legs one step at a time. Then they paint their dinosaur and press the button to watch the legs go.
A First Look at How Robots Move
Every dinosaur is a small lesson in simple robotics. The controller sends power to the motor, the motor turns it into motion, and the linked legs turn that spin into a step. Each instruction sheet also shares facts about its dinosaur. Curious kids can read more in our guide, What Makes a Toy Robot Move?

I really had fun building these kits with three of my kids. I did pretty much everything for my 4 year old, but my 8 and 10 year old boys were able to do about 90% of the build. I had to help with the wiring and a few small adjustments in part placements.I found the build quality to be excellent and the instructions very good. We didn't have any second guessing or redoing because of hard to follow instructions, which is really nice.We didn't have any parts break during the build. I have had things like this happen before, which is frustrating. The feet are a potential week point where the screws thread in. I have one break after some use. Nothing a little wood glue wouldn't fix.Three things I thought could use improvement. They are related to the wiring. 1) The wire is VERY thin and likely won't hold up to much use. Probably something like a 22 or 24 gage. 2) The positive and negative are not marked on the wire, which isn't a big deal, but does mean that you have a 50% chance of the buttons doing the opposite function as you would expect. 3) I added a a knot in the wire inside the build to keep it from pulling directly on the terminals. This will keep the wire connections from coming use when the wire is pulled on during use. See photos for example. With the knotted wire modification, these are great and I highly recommend them!
This is a STEM activity set that includes 3 whole dinosaur activities. I was really impressed with the quality of each of the kits and did I mention it contains 3 instead of just 1. I got this for my Grandson who is only 3 so it was a bit of an challenge for him to do alone. This would be a great set for an older kid. We were able to finish 1 dino but I had to do it for him. We decided to save the other 2 for another day. The sets are good and if you follow the directions an older kid would have no problems finishing. Even so I gave this set 5 Stars. It is a great idea and with all the stuff included in the kit it is a very good value. This would be a perfect snow day activity for a school age child.
This was a fun dinosaur building kit that I did with my kids. The instructions were easy to understand and follow for me. My 13 year olds were also able to follow the instructions to put these together helping their younger siblings. Younger children will definitely need assistance putting these together. We decided not to paint these, but the kids did take markers later and color them.Once they were all put together the kids had fun playing with them and having dinosaur battles with them. These are built out of wood so they are breakable and it didn't take too long before the head piece broke on the Brachiosaurus. I was able to glue and tape it back together. The Brachiosaurus is the most wobbly when walking. The T-rex and Triceratops were more stable walking. Some of the pieces (the little circle pieces that hold the legs on for example) tended to fall off after some time. A tiny bit of glue on the outside part can be used to fix this, you would just have to be careful not to get the glue on any of the moving parts.
This is a neat Stem Kit for my 9 year old daughter. Kept her entertained for a long while. The wood is soft balsa and is fragile. Some parts inevitably break. Luckily they have extra wood parts in each kit that come in handy.Instructions with each kit are pretty good. I would recommend using wire cutters to skin the leads on the battery packs more so than a lighter as the instructions say.
Good
My son loved building the dino. He was completely engaged throughout this activity. Once built, the dino was fun to play and interact with.
5 Stars
I worked on this project with my 4 year-old-son who loves dinosaurs! It was too challenging for him to do alone, but it was a great bonding experience for us to work on together! It combined his love of dinosaurs with building and technology. The dinosaur moved well when we attached the wires. If you have a child who loves dinosaurs and building, I highly recommend this product!
It's a really fun family activity! I like that it gives the kids the opportunity to paint, assemble and bring the Creation to life!
My son loves projects where he can build, the fact that it also moves is just so cool! It’s a great activity to do together. Very easy to understand and such a good time!
Questions parents ask
What's included in the Robotic Dinosaur Kit?
The parts for three moving dinosaurs. You get the mechanical Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, and Brachiosaurus assemblies, each with its own motor, wired controller, and screws. It also comes with 8 colors of paint, 2 paint brushes, and step-by-step instructions.
Can kids paint the dinosaurs?
Yes. The kit comes with 8 colors of paint and 2 paint brushes, so kids can give each dinosaur its own colors, or leave the natural wood showing.
What will kids learn about dinosaurs?
Each instruction sheet shares facts about its dinosaur, so kids learn a little about the Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, and Brachiosaurus as they build them. The builds themselves are a first look at simple robotics, with a motor and a controller in every dinosaur.
How do the dinosaurs move?
Each dinosaur has its own small motor, wired to a handheld controller with a red and a green button. Press either button and the motor turns the linked legs, so the dinosaur moves back and forth. If it stops moving, the instructions' troubleshooting guide walks you through checking the wire connections and the shaft clamps that drive the legs.
How long does it take?
It depends on the builder. Each dinosaur is a separate project with its own step-by-step instructions, so kids can build one at a time and save the next for another day. Painting adds drying time, which is a good moment to read the dinosaur facts on the instruction sheet.
What ages is it best for?
It is recommended for ages 8 and up. The instructions ask kids to build with an adult, so plan on it as a project to share: kids fit the parts and turn the screws, and a grown-up helps with the wiring and handles the one step that is just for adults.
Is it safe for kids?
Every Pinwheel Crafts kit is CPSIA compliant, which means it meets the US federal safety requirements for children's products, and this kit conforms to ASTM D-4236, the US labeling standard for art materials. It contains small parts, so it is not for children under 3. One wiring step is a job for a grown-up.
Does it make a good gift?
Yes. With three dinosaurs in the box, siblings or friends can each build their own and then run them side by side. It is a great pick for birthdays and holidays for kids who love dinosaurs or building things that move.
