The Terrazzo Plaster Trinket Dish Kit lets kids make a real terrazzo-style dish from scratch. They mix small batches of plaster with each paint color, spread them thin to dry, and break them into colorful chips. Those chips go into a bigger batch of white plaster, which is poured into the round silicone mold. Once the dish has set, it pops out of the mold, and a little wet sanding brings the speckles into view. It is a project kids come back to across two sittings, because the color chips need a few hours to dry.

Can kids choose the colors?

Yes. Kids decide which of the 4 paint colors to use, how big to break the chips, and how many to stir in, so no two dishes look alike.

How long does it take?

Plan on two sittings. First, kids mix each paint color into a small batch of plaster and spread it thin, and it needs a few hours to dry completely. Then they break it into chips, stir the chips into a bigger batch of plaster, and pour it into the mold. When the dish has completely set, it comes out of the mold, and it should dry completely before it is used.

What ages is it best for?

It is recommended for ages 8 and up, with adult supervision. Kids do the mixing, spreading, pouring, and sanding, and a grown-up is a good partner for measuring the plaster powder.

Is it safe for kids?

Every Pinwheel Crafts kit is CPSIA compliant, which means it meets the US federal safety requirements for children's products, and this kit conforms to ASTM D-4236, the US labeling standard for art materials. It contains small parts, so it is not for children under 3. No oven is needed, and adult supervision is recommended while the plaster is measured and mixed.

Why doesn't my dish look like terrazzo yet?

That is normal when it first comes out of the mold. Wet the surface lightly and polish it with the sandpaper until the colored chips show clearly. Our guide on how to make a trinket dish has more tips.

What can the dish hold?

It is made for organizing keys, small treasures, and jewelry, like rings, earrings, and a watch. It looks right at home on a dresser, a nightstand, or a table by the front door.
