What Your Child Makes

The Stained Glass Deco Kit lets kids make two suncatchers that look like real stained glass. They pour colored beads into each section of a decorative frame, a grown-up slides the tray into a 375°F oven, and 25 to 30 minutes later the beads have melted into smooth, glowing panes of color. Once everything has cooled, kids add the chains and hang their work in a sunny window.

There is no glass to cut and nothing sharp to handle. The color comes from plastic beads that melt and fuse inside the frame, so kids get the look of a stained glass window from a project they fill in themselves. My eight-year-old six-year-old four-year-old and I completed this craft together and it was a hit! While, it did take some dexterity to get all the pieces in the frame, which is honestly is great for little kids to practice doing, they had a lot of fun putting it together & waiting for their final pieces to come out and neither could I! Is it real glass?

No. The color comes from plastic beads that melt in a home oven at 375°F and fuse into smooth, see-through panes inside the frame. There is no glass to cut and no kiln involved.

How long does it take?

Filling the frames takes as long as your child likes. Baking takes 25 to 30 minutes, then the pieces cool for about 10 minutes, so both suncatchers can be hanging in the window the same afternoon. Do not overbake, because the beads can burn.

What ages is it best for?

It is recommended for ages 8 and up. Kids choose the colors and fill the frames themselves, and a grown-up handles the oven, the hot tray, and the cooling.

Is it safe for kids?

Every Pinwheel Crafts kit is CPSIA compliant, which means it meets the US federal safety requirements for children's products, and this kit conforms to ASTM D-4236, the US labeling standard for art materials. How do the suncatchers hang?
